Blues Rock 2016 Vol.5 (Jul 07, 2026) 70 Tracks (05:00:00)

bluesrock 2016 Vol.5 (Women of Blues Rock). 2016 was a pivotal and significant period for women in blues rock, marked by a powerful combination of rising young virtuoso guitarists and genre veterans pushing the boundaries. Female performers dominated festivals, topped the charts, and championed a harder, crossover sound that blended traditional blues with hard rock, soul, and Americana.
Samantha Fish: 2016 was a year of extensive touring for Fish in support of her album, Wild Heart. She became a festival sensation, attracting attention at major events like the Waterfront Blues Festival and Telluride Blues & Brews Festival with her virtuosic cigar box guitar solos and viral rock version of Black Sabbath's "War Pigs." Tough, swampy blues from the hills of North Mississippi, mixed with modern roots rock. Although released in mid-2015, the album became the catalyst for her monumental 2016 touring season. Produced by Luther Dickinson, the album highlights her virtuoso cigar box guitar playing. Key tracks: "Turn It Up," "Wild Heart," "Bitch On the Run."
Jackie Venson: The Austin virtuoso made a major breakthrough into the mainstream in 2016. At 26, her unique blend of blues, rock, and soul earned her a breakout performance on "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert," cementing her status as a rising legend.
Sari Shorr: The powerful New York vocalist officially burst onto the global blues-rock scene in 2016 with her debut album, "A Force of Nature." Produced by blues pioneer Mike Vernon, the album has repeatedly made "Best Albums of the Year" lists for its hard-hitting, energetic rock music. Hard-hitting, energetic British-style blues-rock fused with the energy of classic 1970s rock, this stunning debut established Shorr as a leading voice in modern rock. Her vocals are incredibly powerful, backed by a tight, powerful rhythm section. Key tracks: "Ain't No Big Thing," "Black Betty," "Demolition Man"
In 2016, Ruf Records' celebrated "Blues Caravan" tour featured a vibrant female lineup of international talent, who toured extensively across Europe and the United States.
Finnish vocalist Ina Forsman released her self-titled debut album in 2016, bringing a raw, soulful, and dramatic vocal style to the blues-rock scene.
Tasha Taylor, daughter of soul icon Johnny Taylor, brought deep, horn-heavy Memphis soul-blues-rock fusion to the stage while promoting her 2016 album, Honey For the Biscuit.
Layla Zoe, dubbed Canada's "blues darling," released Breaking Free in 2016, an explosive album that earned her praise for her Janis Joplin-inspired style.
Bonnie Raitt, the legendary "Queen of Slide Guitar," released her twentieth studio album, Dig In Deep, in 2016. The album was a huge commercial and critical success, debuting in the Billboard Top 15 and proving that her signature bottleneck slide guitar playing remains impeccable. Raitt creates her own signature groove here. The album is a masterful blend of her original compositions and powerful rock covers. Key Tracks: "Gypsy in Me," "Unintended Way," "Need You Tonight" (INXS cover)
Susan Tedeschi, co-leader of the Tedeschi Trucks Band, released Let Me Get By in January 2016. The album highlighted her soaring, gospel-infused vocals and impressive bluesy guitar lines, where she trades parts with her husband, Derek Trucks.
Serbian-born Ana Popović, a phenomenal guitarist, released her ambitious triple album Trilogy in 2016. The project beautifully showcased her versatility in rock, jazz, and funky blues, cementing her place at the top of the contemporary blues guitar hierarchy. Popović released a massive 23-track triple album showcasing her phenomenal technical mastery of the guitar in three distinct musical styles. Key Tracks: "You Got the Love," "She Was a Doer," "Hook Me Up"
Beth Hart, a powerful vocalist, released her album, "Fire on the Floor." It received rave reviews from critics for its emotional depth, combining powerful rock energy with sensual, slow-paced blues. It's a sensual, rich, and emotionally revealing blend of blues, heavy rock, and jazz. It features one of Hart's most diverse vocal performances. It perfectly balances heavy, aggressive rock tracks with slow, heartbreaking blues ballads. Key Tracks: "Fire on the Floor," "Love Is a Lie," "Baby Shot Me Down".
What made 2016 unique for women in blues-rock was the fundamental shift in power, sound, and visibility. It was the year when female artists ceased to be treated as a "subgenre" or a curiosity, and instead became dominant innovators, driving the entire blues-rock movement forward. The sound of female-fronted blues-rock in 2016 became significantly heavier. Influenced by 1970s stadium rock, female artists infused traditional blues structures with a powerful dose of distortion, aggressive riffs, and dark rhythm sections. In 2016, women abandoned the traditional 12-bar blues formula to create incredibly ambitious, boundary-pushing records.

Funk and blues-rock were closely linked in 2002, thanks to their shared roots in African-American music and the major "retro" movement. Early rock pioneers directly borrowed the blues scale and syncopated rhythms. By 2002, bands were naturally blending these percussive funk rhythms with the hard, guitar-driven blues.
Both genres rely on the same musical building blocks. The blues scale: Both funk and blues use a six-note progression that gives the music a soulful, sinuous sound. Just as a blues singer "speaks" to their guitar, a funk horn section "responds" to the rhythm. Rhythm is more important than melody. In the 1960s, artists like James Brown shifted the emphasis from chord changes to intense, percussive rhythms. He used the guitar as a percussion instrument, not as a melodic instrument.
Blues-rock bands embraced this idea, combining these energetic funk drum rhythms with heavy rock guitars. In 2002, the music industry experienced a huge wave of garage rock and alternative bands. These bands sought a raw, vibrant, and danceable sound. Artists like The Black Keys and The White Stripes combined the distortion of blues with the swaying, groove-driven rhythms of funk. This created a style called "groove rock," which paid homage to both genres. By 2002, hip-hop was actively using 1970s funk samples. Rock musicians wanted to stay contemporary, so they adopted the same heavy basslines and syncopated rhythms. This fostered the intertwining of funk and blues-rock, as bands combined old-school soul with modern rock energy.
The key to blending funk and blues-rock was the combination of rhythmic scratching with vocal string bending. Funk provided a precise, percussive rhythm, while blues-rock provided an emotional, sustained melody. Percussive scratching was achieved by lightly touching the strings with the right hand, without pressing them against the fretboard. Drum-like clicks were common when striking the guitar with a pick. True chords alternated with scratches, creating a funky, syncopated rhythm beneath the blues riff. Skank guitar picking was also common: strumming several muted strings while pressing only one target note. The sound was sharp, aggressive, and punchy: a sound that cut through the music. This effect was achieved by aggressively picking the muted strings immediately before striking a powerful blues note.
Double stops and sliding fourths were widely used: playing two notes simultaneously, usually on adjacent strings. This created a rhythmic, brass-like sound, reminiscent of the sharp chords popular in both Hendrix-style rock and James Brown-style funk.
Thumb-picking the bass note (the Hendrix grip) was also widely used—using the left thumb to play the root note on the low E string. This freed the other four fingers for accents, fills, and embellishments. A dominant 9th chord, a funk-style chord shape made famous by James Brown's "Sex Machine" and Jimi Hendrix's "Purple Haze" (particularly the E7#9 variation), was also used. The sound became sharp, tense, and very danceable.
Finally, hybrid picking was employed. Holding the pick between the thumb and index finger, players simultaneously plucked the strings with the middle and ring fingers. The sound was achieved through the aggressive attack of the pick combined with the sharp, staccato sound of fingerstyle picking.
To achieve the perfect hybrid funk-blues-rock sound, it was necessary to balance sharpness and dynamics with crisp, percussive notes. The result was a piercing rock sustain without losing the rhythmic clarity necessary for funky scratching.
In 2002, Warren Haynes (Gov't Mule), Doyle Bramhall II (Smokestack), and Derek Trucks were among the guitarists who employed these techniques exclusively within the confines of purist blues-rock and jam bands. While alternative rock bands exploited this sound for mainstream radio, these artists employed the same gear and mechanics to revolutionize traditional blues.
In October 2002, Gov't Mule released The Deep End, Volume 2. Haynes is known for bringing powerful funk grooves to Southern blues-rock. He used a massive blend of dominant ninth chords and hybrid picking techniques to give his heavy blues riffs a swinging, syncopated rhythm.
