#albumbluesrock Vol.16/2026 We're still reminiscing about the acclaimed releases of 50 years ago, diving deeper into the current year, and also looking back at the events of two and three years ago.

Travis Bolt - Burning Bridges (2026) This 14-song album, delving into the complex and contradictory mind of Bolt, features several tracks from previous projects, including hits like "Never Tried Cocaine," which has amassed 13 million streams, and ultimately proves worthy of attention for anyone interested in keeping up with the contemporary blues-tinged country scene. While there will likely always be a place for bro- and pop-country, associated with buzzwords, fast tempos, and superficial themes, country is finding a new voice - a raspy one. And Bolt fits that description perfectly. This success culminates in "Blues At My Funeral," the album's strongest track. It's one of the few instances where the surging drums and background music blend beautifully with Bolt's vocals, making the track feel cohesive on an album with abrupt key shifts.

The album's problem lies in its abrupt tempo and key shifts. Some tracks, like "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us" and "Home Is Where The Hard Is," are so toned down that they no longer sound like the typically extravagant Bolt, but more like Morgan Wallen, minus the songwriting polish.

Ghalia Volt - Burn The House Down (2026) Ghalia Volt's aggressive vocals and the powerful instrumentation that runs throughout "No Ice Please" are complemented by Brian Allen's bass, gritty guitars (Ghalia and JD), and Chris Powell's captivating drums. The result is a delicious formula, similar to what Amy Winehouse developed after being pricked by the thorns of '60s girl groups. Galia (vocals/guitars/slide guitar) offers atmosphere and boldness in abundance, complemented by the guitar interplay. "Mine" alone is seductive, sensual, and even a little sweaty. Eleven red matches light a box on "Burn The House Down" (released May 15/Ruf Records/37:432), produced by J.D. Simo (guitars/slide guitar) at The House of Grease in Nashville, Tennessee. Overall, the songs are catchy, good rock 'n' roll with a retro edge, and Galia's vocal intonation, phrasing, and articulation elevate the album to a true work of art. "Ride" is powerful, while the slow, bluesy "Where Do We Go" is smoky. The guitar is heavy and provocative, with a hint of the late John Campbell. Impressive from start to finish.

Boogie Beasts - Don't Be So Mean! (2026) Boogie Beasts celebrates its 15th anniversary and the 100th anniversary of R.L. Burnside's birth with a new album, "Don't Be So Mean!". This year, the Belgian alternative blues rockers Boogie Beasts turn 15 years old - and they're celebrating in style. The timing is perfect: it's also the 100th anniversary of R.L. Burnside's birth, one of the band's main inspirations and a true legend of the Hill Country blues region of Northern Mississippi. In honor of both milestones, the band is releasing a brand-new collaborative album - a tribute to R.L. Burnside. "Don't Be So Mean!" is more than just a tribute. This unique collaboration brings together artists from both sides of the Atlantic who share a deep love of Burnside and Hill Country blues. The album features three Mississippi musicians who once shared the stage with Burnside. His son, Duane Burnside, sings vocals on two tracks. Longtime guitarist Kenny Brown - Burnside's right-hand man - also contributes two songs. Luther Dickinson (North Mississippi Allstars, ex-The Black Crowes) adds his signature slide guitar. From Philadelphia, G. Love brings a smooth hip-hop edge to "Shake 'Em On Down." In Europe, the Boogie Beasts are joined by Pablo van de Poel of the Dutch psychedelic rock trio DeWolff and Belgian garage rocker Cedric Maes (The Sore Losers, The Sha-La-Lees), each bringing their own unique energy. On Don’t Be So Mean!, Boogie Beasts return to the roots of their sound - tight grooves, hypnotic riffs, and the unbridled spirit of Hill Country blues - while remaining true to their wild and uncompromising style. “Going Down South” is one of R.L. Burnside’s most iconic tracks, built around this hypnotic, repeating riff. We added a vibrant dance groove as a nod to his remix albums. When Pablo van de Poel, vocalist and guitarist for the Dutch trio DeWolff, first heard the basic track, his first reaction was: “Delta disco!” Jan and Gert have known Pablo for years, dating back to their former band opening for DeWolff several times in the Netherlands. While DeWolff isn't usually associated with heartland blues, Pablo clearly has an ear for it, and his collection includes several R.L. Burnside records. He didn't hesitate for a second when asked to join this tribute. He performs backing vocal (falsetto) and a great guitar part, adding an extra layer that gives the track a distinct psychedelic sound.

The Karma Effect - Cruel Intentions (2026) The Karma Effect's third album, Cruel Intentions, is the follow-up to their stunning UK Top 20 album Promised Land and the most complete and crystal-clear expression of their ambitions: leaner, louder, heavier, and joyfully expansive. Exploring love, lust, and danger with dark passion and flashes of audacity, the songs teem with daring and wit. The band's modus operandi is "modern vintage," striving to polish the retro sound they grew up with into a sleek, modern ballad of groove and energy. "We put everything we had into this album," says vocalist Henry Gottellier. "We worked with producer Michael Charman again and also brought in Romesh Dodangoda to mix it; to make every note count, to give you a stadium sound." Those good old '70s bands are all the rage right now. We've seen tremendous progress in bands like Rival Sons, Greta Van Fleet, and the latest hits from Dirty Honey. The popularity of their music even led to a reunion with The Black Crowes, who took on the role of Grandfathers. The Karma Effect may be considered newcomers among these bands, but they deserve to be considered, as songs like "Wild Honey" hold their own with any of these bands, and they have everything they need to succeed live. The guitar work of Henry Gottellier and Robbie Blake here is simply impeccable. It's impossible to listen to this song and not be disheartened. It's a very energetic song in its own right.

"Be My Salvation" teeters on the edge of Southern rock and reminded me of Skin and their "Tower of Strength," which is huge praise for me, as I absolutely adore that song. It's what we used to call a "stadium filler." In "Come to Life," the rhythm section really comes into its own: Ash Powell on drums and Liam Quinn on bass absolutely blow the roof off the floor, giving the song a unique funk. Each song flows seamlessly into the next, creating a truly cohesive piece of music that will have your hips swaying and your feet tapping like crazy. There's another killer riff in "Nine Times," which begins with a quick rhythm change into a funky, extreme number with that signature Mr. Big sound. Take all these elements, and you have a stunning song. Then they kick up the tempo to a frantic explosion of noise, beats, and groove. Things almost spiral out of control, but never let up thanks to the brilliant playing.

Lower Case Blues - Take It For A Ride (2024) Delaware trio Lower Case Blues' album Take It For A Ride has earned critical and fan praise for its energetic, funky blues and virtuoso instrumental performances. Described as "good funky blues" with quality compositions and powerful, groove-oriented basslines, the band's musicianship is a major asset. Jake Banaszak's lead guitar playing is often noted for its dazzling, brutal virtuosity and deeply emotional expressiveness. The trio, led by BJ Muntz (bass/vocals) and Tristan Gilbert (drums/vocals), is renowned for its incredibly tight playing, creating a captivating funk sound both on record and live. "Lower Case Blues moved to the coast 20 years ago, when they were 20 years old. Down here, no one had heard of them, but up north, in New Castle County, they were already gaining fame and attracting a devoted following. Incidentally, one of their high school teachers suggested the name, and it stuck. In October 2003, they traveled to Lewes for an open mic night. Their talent was immediately noticed, and they were invited to perform at an upcoming street festival in Rehoboth. Since then, LCB, as the band is called, has earned a living as professional musicians, playing a mix of blues, funk, and rock, using Rehoboth as their regional base.

Sound Of Smoke - Phases (2023) Introducing a unique psychedelic rock band from Freiburg, Germany. This is Sound of Smoke's second release, following last year's debut album, Tales, and an album-length EP from 2017. Musically, they immerse themselves in the steady rhythms that are characteristic of Hawkwind, with bass that's loud but never down-tuned. The songs are very different, but it's their usual sound: warm and inviting. What's unusual is that Isabelle Bathe's vocals are completely different from Hawkwind's. She's upbeat, yet airy and free, as if she were singing in a pop band with enough depth to experiment with blues, post-punk, and whatever else she feels like adding to a song. Sound Of Smoke's "Phases" is a captivating listen. From the very first notes, you're completely captivated by the sound of the quartet, led by vocalist Isabelle Bathé. After the opening track, "Shadows," with its almost hypnotic guitar riffs and Florian Kiefer's expressive bass, the atmosphere in the room is truly inspiring. Isabelle Bathé's vocals throughout the song are undeniably siren-like. It's rare to hear this, but here it fits perfectly with the overall sound. A fantastic start to the album! The band typically plays heavier music than just pop, which is unsurprising given the numerous Hawkwind references. "Phases" recalls Hawkwind not only with its energetic rhythms, but also with the post-production echoes layered over Bathé's voice, not to mention the Middle Eastern atmosphere that's present from the very beginning. "Sheriff" devolves into acid blues, a natural fit for Sound of Smoke. "Whiet Raebbit" (that's how it's spelled) adds elements of Dick Dale's surf music. The verses are unusual, with the bass playing lead and the guitar providing rhythm. "Desert Road" is a heavier, more proto-metal-inspired composition, but it has an uplifting rhythm, and Bapte's vocals add a lighter edge.

Rare Breed - Chasing An Illusion (2024) The album "Chasing An Illusion" by blues/rock/metal band Rare Breed (released May 24, 2024) was generally well-received by fans for its raw, heavy guitar riffs and soaring vocals. However, as an independent release, it has somewhat gone unnoticed by major mainstream music critics. Fan reviews and forums often praise the band's instrumental coherence and energetic, modern sound. Listeners often cite standout tracks like "Idle King" and "Born With The Devil In Me" as the album's most replayable tracks. Due to the highly saturated contemporary rock and metal scene, some casual listeners feel that some tracks lean too heavily toward familiar genre tropes.

Diamond Reo - Dirty Diamonds (1976) Diamond Reo's 1976 album Dirty Diamonds is widely regarded among hard rock fans as a brutal, uncompromising masterpiece of slash rock. Listeners praise the heavy, raw guitars and energetic riffs, with many noting that it predates the mood of '80s glam and slash metal bands. Many often describe the album as a relentless, intense onslaught of raw hard rock. It is full of rhythmic, anthemic, and party-oriented tracks. Superb Guitar Work: Lead guitarist Warren King's stunning and acerbic work is often cited as a major highlight, often compared to the sound of Keith Richards and Duane Allman. Favorite tracks include the title track of "Dirty Diamonds," "Power," "Loverboy," and their brash, unhinged cover of The Beatles' "Helter Skelter." Often described as one of the few truly uncompromising hard rock albums to emerge from the Pittsburgh scene of the 1970s, this album is highly prized by collectors.

Van Halen - Zero (The Gene Simmons Demos) (1976) The "Zero" demos are widely regarded by fans and critics as the holy grail of early, celebrated Van Halen. Recorded in 1976 and sponsored by Gene Simmons of Kiss, these unprocessed 10-15 tracks captured the Pasadena band's raw, energetic, and heavily funk-infused club sound before producer Ted Templeman polished them for their debut album. Critics note that while Simmons captured the band's incredible energy live, his production style made their sound somewhat formulaic. It wasn't until Ted Templeman took over for their official 1978 debut album that the band's self-assurance and unique sonic identity fully emerged. Reviewers often note Michael Anthony's bass work on these demos. Fans consider this his most vibrant and dynamic bass performance in Van Halen history, as he later softened his playing, allowing Eddie's guitar to dominate. Eddie's iconic two-handed tapping technique is virtually absent here. However, critics argue that this proves how stunning his playing was even without it—the searing solos on tracks like "On Fire" remain breathtaking. The demos contain early versions of hits like "Runnin' With the Devil" and "House of Pain" (originally titled "House in Pain"), proving that the band almost completely shaped these tracks years before their official release. The collection also includes energetic rock compositions ("She's The Woman," "Big Trouble"), which fans consider superior to some of the band's later, official album tracks.

Bad Company - Run With The Pack (1976) Released in 1976, Run With The Pack is Bad Company's third studio album. It received widespread acclaim from fans and critics for its bluesy hard rock, soulful ballads, and Paul Rodgers' powerful vocals. While some reviewers found it somewhat less cohesive than their previous work, it remains a beloved example of classic rock. Critics call the album a pure musical triumph, featuring brash, distorted guitars and exceptionally clean, rhythmic basslines. The contrast between the energetic rock tracks and the slower, melancholy ballads is often noted as one of the album's main strengths. Some reviews suggest that while the musicianship remains impeccable, the songwriting sometimes lacks the vibrant originality of the first two albums, occasionally repeating the same tempos and melodies. Listeners consistently praise several iconic songs that showcase the band's versatility: "Live for the Music": a high-energy, hard-hitting rock track with an infectious groove that's perfect for opening the album. "Silver, Blue and Gold": a heartfelt, emotional, and slow-burning ballad, praised for its beautiful piano work and Rogers's passionate vocals. "Run With The Pack": the title track, with its great, easy-to-sing-along chorus, remains an upbeat classic rock hit. "Sweet Lil' Sister": a high-energy rocker beloved by fans who appreciate the band's rawer, blues-infused roots. "Young Blood": a rhythmic, bluesy cover of '50s rock 'n' roll that became one of the album's biggest hits.
